Amazon firestick v/s Chromecast

Gone are the times when consumers had to pay a hefty amount of money to their cable operators for their subscription of various tv channels. Thus, creating a limitation on viewing entertainment channels, but now things have changed drastically with the introduction of various streaming sticks. With a good internet connection and a suitable streaming box, one can browse unlimited entertainment for himself. But the question here is how to decide which streaming box is perfect is for you?

Two names which are very popular in this context are Amazon firestick and Google Chromecast. Amazon introduced its Fire TV stick in India about a year ago which is available on their website with the price tag of Rs.3,999/- and provides access to Amazon Prime videos, Hotstar, Netflix and many more. It allows its customers to view TV shows, movies, videos, songs everything on just one stick. Google Chromecast, on the other hand, is cheaper than Amazon Firestick. It is priced for Rs.3,399 on Flipkart and the price might further dip during an online sale. Also, it provides more or less same basic task of streaming videos and music just like Amazon firestick. So apart from the pricing, how would one decide which one suits perfectly for him/her? Well, look no more. Here’s a list of parameters on which one can easily decide which one to go for. So, let’s have a look.

Degree of Control and User Interface

Talking about Amazon firestick, it comes with a Bluetooth connectivity so the stick act as a device or remote and hence, it becomes easier to pause a video or to resume watching where you left. Amazon has kept the traditional feel of watching tv with its firestick by making it act as a remote. On the other hand, Google Chromecast act as a service rather than a device which you can connect to your phone, tablet, and laptop and cast your favorite channels from your device to your television. In order to skip a video, or pause a movie you always have to locate your phone. Thus, you always need to keep it nearby. Since Amazon firestick act as a remote itself, there’s no role of your mobile device. It also has its own Fire TV Remote app available for Android and iOS devices to facilitate typing as well.

Quality and Performance

The video resolution provided by both Amazon fire TV stick and Chromecast is same i.e. 1080p. Amazon firestick comes with a quad-core 1.3 GHz processor so that the videos could load faster and consume less bandwidth. On the other hand, Chromecast uses your phone to connect through apps, and phone apps get updated faster as compared to the Android TV ones. Hence, you will have less crashes, better-optimized apps to stream from. Both the stick support dual-band Wi-Fi.

Browsing

Amazon Fire TV stick remote has a button for voice command by using it, one can open any prime video title or any app like Netflix. Thus, it lacks a universal searching feature despite the fact that it has a search tab dedicated to it. Amazon voice remote also lacks voice assistant Alexa which is not yet available in India so the voice command is hence, absent in the included remote. On the other hand, Chromecast doesn’t go beyond Netflix and YouTube and shows only a dozen of titled videos. Hence, eventually one has to rely on searching manually through his/her phone in order to stream any video.

Number of Apps support

Google claims to have around 20,000 apps hence, it provides a wider support base for  Chromecast as it provides a wider choice for Consumer to stream from. On the other hand, Amazon Fire TV Stick has a support of merely 3,000 apps including the apps like Netflix, Airtel Movies, Voot, YouTube, Eos app, Gaana etc. which are common in both the streaming devices.  Since they are competitors, their own offering is missing in each other platforms i.e. on Chromecast you wouldn’t find Prime Videos and on Amazon Fire TV stick you will not see Play Music. But overall, in terms of app support, you’ll find more choices on Chromecast as compared to Amazon Fire TV Stick.

Weight and Warranty

Amazon Fire TV stick has a weight of 32g whereas Google Chromecast has a weight of 39.1g. Both Amazon Fire TV Stick and Google Chromecast comes with a 1-year long warranty provided by the manufacturer.

Conclusion:

Both Amazon Fire TV stick and Google Chromecast are equal in terms of their functionalities and features. If you want to stream unlimited online videos especially through Amazon Prime Videos then one should prefer Amazon Fire TV stick whereas if you want to go for a cheaper alternative with easy streaming through the phone. One can go for Google Chromecast. Thus, the device which will be suitable for you will depend on how you want to use it based on your needs
